One of the most anticipated events of the year is on this weekend (May 26/27). The 19th annual Doors Open Toronto presented by Great Gulf allows regular plebs like us to explore inside more than 130 of the most architecturally, historically, culturally and socially significant buildings in Toronto. They’ve got churches, cultural centres, homes, studios and more. And many are kid-friendly. If you’re really keen, sign up for one of their fascinating walking tours.

This year’s theme, “Film: The Great Romance” explores the city’s film and television industry.
Some Highlights
City Hall
City hall is ground zero for the event. Nathan Phillips square will be buzzing with free activities, special programs and rare access to the 27th floor Observation Deck and Council Chambers.
Shaftesbury TV
Enjoy displays of iconic props from beloved series Murdoch Mysteries – including a 10-foot robot and the “Pendrick Bullet” – as well as a variety of wardrobe items and real antiques used in the series. Snap a selfie at the Murdoch photo wall, stop by the Murdoch Mysteries pop-up shop with new, exclusive merch, and swing by the kids’ colouring station.

Aga Khan Museum
Explore the light-filled atrium, open-air courtyard, 336-seat auditorium, intimate Bellerive Room and neighbouring Ismaili centre. Free family-friendly activities include pop-up music and dance performances.
Black Creek Pioneer Village
Forty authentically restored homes, workshops and public buildings recreate the atmosphere of life in a rural Victorian community in the 1860s. The setting has been the location for numerous films and television shows, from “Anne of Green Gables” to “Alias Grace.” Watch Historical interpreters in period costume demonstrate historic trades and crafts of the 1800s, visit the farm animals and enjoy the lively 19th century atmosphere.

Marvel at the dazzling interior of the stunning First Nations longhouse, a space that showcases Indigenous culture, in all its visual splendour. Visit the rooftop medicine garden, check out the artisanal market and have an interactive experience with indigenous youth filmmakers through the 7th Generation Image Makers.

St. John’s Convent
Explore this oasis of peace, beauty, and hospitality in the middle of a noisy city.
