April has arrived, and with it comes Earth Day. Toronto families of all shapes and sizes are gearing up to go green. If you’re wondering what to do to celebrate Earth Day in Toronto and take a walk on the green(er) side, we have 20 suggestions for you.

1. Let your kids dig in the mud.
When you’re wondering what to do in Toronto for a little bit of spring fun, this is a fabulous, low-budget option.

2. Read Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv.
Louv shares a convincing argument on why it’s critical for kids to have free time to spend in natural places, for their health and the health of the planet.

3. Shop for toxin-free sunscreen.
We’re hoping for a gorgeous summer in Toronto, and we want to be prepared!

4. Attend the Earth Day Party 2017

5. Swap seeds with a friend


Don’t want to grow way more lettuce than you can eat? Trading some of your romaine seeds for beet or carrot seeds will not only save you money, it will help build community on Earth Day in Toronto.

6. Dig your bikes out of storage and have them serviced so they’re ready to ride.
Green transportation isn’t only easy on the planet, it’s great exercise and fun, so make sure you’re prepared when the mood and weather both cooperate.

8. Read up on the dirty dozen
Knowing which foods carry the most pesticide residue helps you make budget-conscious shopping choices and avoid the most polluted produce.

9. Go for a walk outside.

10. Safely dispose of any unwanted household poisons and pesticides you may have around the house.

11. Bake a loaf of bread.

12. Visit the Toronto Botanical Garden


They’re holding a free Earth Day Family Celebration on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 12:00-4:00 pm featuring nature activities like hikes, crafts and planting. torontobotanicalgarden.ca.

13. Pick up some free compost.
Toronto residents can pick up free compost from April to October at Leaf Compost Depots and Community Environment Days. There are two Community Environment Days happening on Saturday, April 19, 2014, from 10:00am to 2:00pm along Wabash Avenue south of Dundas Street W. and at Amesbury Arena, 155 Culford Road. You can also pick up a Green Bin and Kitchen Container, donate items to local schools and recycle your old electronics.

14. Go birdwatching.

15. Do a neighbourhood cleanup and clear your street of any garbage.

16. Use vinegar and baking soda to do some spring cleaning.
Vinegar and water work wonders on windows, and baking soda is fabulous for scouring. Miss the smell of scented products? Add a drop or two of essential oil and your house will look and smell great without using any chemicals.

17. Hang a load of laundry to dry outside instead of using the dryer.

18. Read the ingredients on the cosmetic and personal care products you use every day.

19. Take transit.

20. Clear out your kids closets and toy bins and donate the items they’re not using anymore to a thrift store.
This will free up space in your home, and help your old stuff to be reused by an appreciative new owner.
